Some of them we're happy about, others not so much, but our latest cohabitants are very welcome...& so cute too!<br />These fox pups are about 1 month old. There are 5 out of the den so far, & we've enjoyed them out our back windows for several days now. This afternoon, 3 were out to play.<br /><p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332420153296179794" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 267px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Xe-QmB-EvhoZHZFu5-p4htyAW_V-NRNBlg5Z7_GWWR3rncWlGVAq_Pi2EOdnB3m1YIRwL_zEbu3voV-sm9r8rX1t2Z5SxH1Rr7RLKcPZIYOp4AanQSpjzMLonrT8Qgu3cWKnHggF-FE/s400/pups+out+to+play+5-5-09+(4).JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSq9-7dEcJTY0mW21j9PpYqu1aHxGwrgxJ22NdVFhkrJ0knc0Fij1H2HZoACqwARkKt8QfZwwUO7DeSWrrh4k9SqfMun6-FJzQ-gt-4BvmE4gwWNOuX5ZOKdQk58yvDFKnbLF3aeCtcJ4/s1600-h/pups+out+to+play+5-5-09+(6).JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332420444566187106" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 267px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSq9-7dEcJTY0mW21j9PpYqu1aHxGwrgxJ22NdVFhkrJ0knc0Fij1H2HZoACqwARkKt8QfZwwUO7DeSWrrh4k9SqfMun6-FJzQ-gt-4BvmE4gwWNOuX5ZOKdQk58yvDFKnbLF3aeCtcJ4/s400/pups+out+to+play+5-5-09+(6).JPG" border="0" /></a> </p><p>The one on the left was more reserved, & only joined in occasionally. I feel like my time is broken up into bits & pieces & parts, always running around doing one thing or another... yet somehow, I haven't finished cutting back some ratty-looking perennials in the gardens, I haven't posted here in over a month (so much for that "at least once a month" plan), & I haven't even <em>begun</em> to think of holiday shopping. I've usually established a good start on that by now.</span> </span><div><div><div><div><div><br /><div><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></div><div><span style="font-size:130%;color:#663300;">I know what I did yesterday, & I'm excited: I talked to a native plant landscape designer about trees, lots & lots of trees, & where to put them on our property. I now have little orange flags waving from wire stakes in a huge patch of our yard -- an area that was brush & has now been cleared bare (but for the weeds). But I hardly see the flags, because I can so easily see the trees. Sugar maples. Sweet birch. Black gum. Alive in the spring. Cool & shady in summer. Firey in fall. Tall & strong in winter. Of course when we get them planted, they will be small & scrawny & struggling to take hold. But still they will be trees.</span></div><div><span style="font-size:130%;color:#663300;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-size:130%;color:#663300;">Last week's excitement was, of course, of a different nature (pun intended):</span><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265180103069851826" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 266px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96MIpLlx1n54uDzWji7SD0JfggqU2xLH3P1XfrFvXt6wZ7dHVDybSCMIwrboy4tJCRH7-GaFCc46azvZnSABCOPL3Ma5kkzXskbz84PJgOfW2NEMVHf7anI5R0s6SxJX89CiybwsIneA/s400/carving+(2)+crop.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265180107531737586" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih2mVjoUUxaxwzW3BzgUsXdKVpCE6MT1ccfw-6xx2syvLY59myQOmlx8BrHXkEvz2cfrSM634wjnnrPY_JEp2v8gRUfjEqE-44woX1iW2YIFW-gPSS8EPYNBNgd0b00UWfOKdTtDixpmk/s400/carving+(8).JPG" border="0" /> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265181324358207922" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRvC0UWQHiLHG9611sw40ug7jZcdQ7dXZdSodPEdQjbGiIrsBgjfpQ-VXHvSFgxhmAkKzxw6QI7IdtcfjE-prjYeVEiOSOeZy5oJMbau5jtLHxvpFDxGo1-cG29YIdQomsuUQ6hjE-27o/s400/carving.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265180111060588658" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRFXMokAhXp27jiLRlqnNxd4oCXYA-rJ4xWbwliv1Rfl2AWYZc6oiS6HOUNjC0N2ydU3XxNvr0Y6CgsMOUnq4eVpAA1g9Um2eeI0LYz6tYpxV-KiroYflbfoyy1TQJUowcCsDbNToDBrc/s400/carving+(9).JPG" border="0" /> </div></div></div></div></div></div>lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-61528136756840044552008-09-08T07:00:00.009-04:002008-09-08T09:57:20.642-04:00New (well, sort of) for 2008These are flowers that I haven't posted previously -- not because the plants are new this year, but because I didn't get a shot of them last year. This is different than to say they continue blooming -- the flowers, once all opened, just remain on the plant for an unusually long time, & continue to look attractive. They started blooming as early as March, were in full bloom in April, & the flowers are still on the plants now in June.<br /><br />There are numerous species & varieties of these elegant plants. Below are the small few that I am currently growing.<br /><br /><em>Helleborus orientalis</em> is called Lenten rose hellebore, because it is in bloom during Lent. I have several of these. Some bloom a rosey purple, others ivory with maroon flecks. Some are not big enough to bloom yet. It takes a few years from seed for them to reach blooming size.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210080932059322642" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_G2U8ZV3JptaEkslz_OyEeLn5Bi8HL4FWlc66VmF2SXClVATUgCzM82NMhLCjNfDltlDHQBaHoaEQh9tEpdV9w1I1ADOUtrIgQY1ZS1xbwfJ0oDLml7bOv3FF2LfGNOYYxdPBBLGiuh8/s400/Helleborus+orientalis+-+purple-1.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210080944096665730" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3s533cUWjbHyTH6LOwDDFooe66aXzZ0k2mlTrx0uQSVl9AwSexc1XWgfcqK1q-kar9eMWKZ_XYJhQbOPW47jTMmAScrNX_qZXagz2X3wvXbk_G8rwY7k1NDHTxnkQnn9hT8SiUstVhOk/s400/Helleborus+orientalis+-+ivory.JPG" border="0" /> <em>Helleborus</em> <em>X</em> <em>nigercors</em> is a cross (that's what the X stands for) between two hellebore species. It has outward-facing flowers on tall stems, so it gets noticed! <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210083317360888322" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuQHHStoFfMUPU98TOtC36JP-3V5_gzzladZP_dgc3yH6rRZ_3-S6rpVikXJh5aFiMGJOihz5ftQ1_0fkHzWIRMqOtgwZKV_iP-LWCsBOPkiX4YJYc4wKQAM4DIZbFziBMUyjUH6Xjxsw/s400/Helleborus+X+nigercors.JPG" border="0" /><em>Helleborus foetidus</em> is called bear's foot hellebore because of the shape of it's finely cut leaves. This hellebore is considered by many to have the most beautiful foliage. The individual flowers aren't as showy as on the other hellebores, but in their large clusters they are impressive, & they are the earliest hellebores to bloom in my garden.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210083391892697394" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAxdPpYSEN8q0s4Z549IAM6DzEmVYplIThCB3phkvuV0iN41-0SL2c14leauFsN1cIOECXjk6c43K3DtnGhI9jxqhVHRDChtIHZkU4CnpJuGlZmWfwSdqtnVYOxtv1qbogqYchrrRJRM0/s400/Helleborus+foetidus.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210083342804543762" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmtfXWsHklvXFgwdn4s1yQwg-YiQwgqWTYV8djQYTnQV-4YX5T8VB1IQ1zIlWlsnKZ4AelosaM3mqNdvuL2lG9HUDt4kx0tk-3NPCGtFzMSYYFm727K8shnobJ_D3-SKPpgSaPQnp4stY/s400/helleborus+foetidis+2.JPG" border="0" /> I need to get a better picture of just the leaves....lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-41816677412544878632008-02-27T11:55:00.007-05:002008-02-27T12:29:13.019-05:00Uh oh, garden needs attention! The recent paint color post hi-lighted what I already knew: gardens are somehow entwined with so much of my life, even when much of them are dormant, even when it doesn't directly relate. Here's another example.<br /><br /><div><div></div><div>I've waited 3 years for this. The fact that it finally came on a frigid winter day & it was 30 degrees in my house, well, that was a small price to pay after all the waiting.</div><br /><div></div><div>Before (I'm all for the retro 70s look, but...):<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171706127041232658" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqm3GfWQPZr79OaciGwfTkAId_FVWUWye8vEDoleFoWPNzH1Ja-GG2BjIWkTlLqgw-g1vMoRNLzkmBXdZn_ugYHR0J93IIEQ_QbMyKm-3CF0LbJQw86RXmpdT1XvKpW7pAVOD4Dth9HeY/s400/door+before+crop.jpg" border="0" /></div><br />During (I could hardly take this one, since my hands were BLUE by this point, but somehow I managed, chattering teeth & all):<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171706135631167266" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgro1i0hN707gkQ7C2l_lA4AC8wM0t2ngHKe57x7i__tQzviGFDxKG0t1CGQA1-SBuKfyNrM-DLI3A7e2r0URKIYG-XSw35z8zIKEdKy_r_nQhQEyL2JhPLAeyNrbkMYbRWC3k43hBvlKA/s400/during.jpg" border="0" /><br />After (Now I need to get that bannister to match the door):<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171711616009436994" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 279px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 409px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" height="468" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx64gt3oDwwODg7mXqQaxyL0mioI-ZlsImxroLBxswOqcWPwRDc1__Ckbuj728aoOikZ8jjUNeMuBT4KcFI3TH3qDq1KJmr5_veRr5Zkiv3eD7hNEvXODD00EefdeThgXgF4tTKIjEJ-g/s400/after,+bigger.jpg" width="324" border="0" /><br />First thought after it was complete: Now people will come to my front door. Hmmm. I really have to get working on the landscaping out there!</div>lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-78123120101336935522008-01-10T20:38:00.000-05:002008-01-10T20:55:35.906-05:00Wintry gardenAll through December I put this post off until I had some good photos to go with it. I never got any photos -- even not-so-good ones.<br />In December, my Mediterranean white heath was in full bloom. I have some white heather too -- similar, & closely related. It's blooming now, but nearly finished. These are evergreen plants, & the only things in my garden that bloom this time of year. They're subtle, blooming in masses of tiny white bells...but being surrounded by dead brown stuff makes them standouts nonetheless.<br />I had 2 other kinds, whether heaths or heathers I don't recall, that were supposed to bloom other times of year. One had a golden foliage & rose flowers, the other was green with bronzey blooms. I planted these in July. Then I went out of town. Genius, huh? One I'm sure is entirely dead, but the other might have a breath left in it. We'll see in spring.<br />Because the ones I planted in spring (& actually cared for) have done well for 2 years (& spread), & because they stay beautifully green & bloom even if it's freezing, I think it's worth investing in more colors/varieties of these winter gems....lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-70117989856624644712007-11-13T09:39:00.000-05:002007-12-05T10:11:35.228-05:00Energizer flowers. They just keep going & going &....<span style="font-size:130%;color:#663366;">The garden doesn't know it's mid-November. Apparently, it hasn't realized either that we've had a few light frosts, & one morning below freezing.<br /><br />Six kinds of mums are still blooming, but this isn't a huge surprise.<br /><br />Neither is it much of a to-do that the blue woods aster is still blooming. Every spring & summer, when it's doing nothing but growing into a bigger & bigger bundle of not-so-interesting little green leaves, I ask myself why I bother to leave it in that prominent spot in the pot between the two garage doors. Every October when it's one of the last things to burst into full bloom, I remember why. Every November, when the leaves turn anywhere from a warm golden yellow to a creamy soft red, & it's <em>still</em> covered with masses of those tiny blue daisy-like flowers, I'm certain it's in the perfect spot.<br /><br />Even later to bloom are the grand, towering monkshoods. They are grand because they can stand over 5' tall, & are sturdy enough to not need staked.</span><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133140218632258914" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5MzTv-hxi2LWAKP7tbt_UJhLD2bpk01bIFwtxHlk5ihTWvk_pLLvzh1vfJtRGpQN8TJ9-lHF1dV8Jddfd5QkVMfDS1kpS66ZoAIjF7VpoVbmAjxWS3zJ0Zh-0ZXcSIumsMQlteNUVsW0/s320/monkshood+crop+1.jpg" border="0" /> <span style="font-size:130%;color:#663366;">They are grand because when most everything else is nearly done for the year, they have luscious, full buds. They are grand because they start blooming when many of the perennials at their feet have leaves already crispy & brown. They are grand because once they start blooming, there can be 2 months of flowers from the same plant, starting at the top, then gradually opening up clusters all the way down the stem.</span><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133140222927226226" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpbK6jAhJozkoBwJnS57guT6mYFXoWznNgf-n8riw4mDAI-NWOLocspRZyOE9vyeanz8TBhrWQRQxNxMgz3CZ03ePBaNfMBmbowxLnKUCKRIYMTm2FTVpm5FlQXNWKVkqAjNL_AfiQLPE/s320/monkshood+crop+3.jpg" border="0" /> <span style="font-size:130%;color:#663366;">They are grand because the deer tend to leave them alone. They are grand because the flowers are somewhat translucent, & the sun shines right through them, showing you the dark veins that run through each one.</span><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133140227222193538" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAZwuX_FmK6QMduIBMPvguvRzMuJk-DBcQZJnHLfc5wefYk1egncEzrBXt7leSwtBx9zhoRZvUkvOiKBk5M35b1BJzO_wVm13-8D-c153-2NC6uB0A1YlF-Qp6DcmqJMGwGWTpxl-iGaQ/s320/monkshood+crop+4.jpg" border="0" /> <span style="font-size:130%;color:#663366;">They are grand because they do all of this in the SHADE under our white pines in the back, & under the huge maple on the side of our house.<br /><br />No, as amazing as they are, the monkshoods aren't what's unusual right now.<br /><br />Nobody told the 'White Swan' coneflowers it's mid-November. They're still going. Nobody told the Alyssum, or the 'Blue Hill' Salvia either. The Agastache doesn't seem to realize. The trumpet honeysuckle & the Heuchera are still forming new buds! The toad lily is still blooming. So are the 'Prairie Sun' Rudbeckia, & the catmint.<br /><br />You don't hear <em>me</em> complaining.</span>lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-43736057919607890472007-10-26T16:06:00.001-04:002008-02-27T11:55:10.611-05:00Autumn blossoms (& berries)Things are still blooming. I hate that it'll end soon, but... there's still time. I actually have a few stalwart perennials that be going in November, but the last month of having blossoms all over the yard of every shape & color is generally October.<br /><br /><br /><div align="center">Some of the October garden:</div><br /><div align="center"></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126189201883789202" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaTUhN_sImTqu2Mk4agLTN_IXQLiCA1TfMVtAXWQAtSk7Df60zptl0fnx_1uwNYI32rLWCxkjDbDq0wnTFu-QLjzokxnQOYvr-Au1Vn_1vo5XfuLv52FX1B2CRIKqsQLg-5ciEqLPhe7I/s400/hot+salsa+3.JPG" border="0" /> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126196159730808786" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXgY0td3WdsbG1ZM1mTnQ7VdqX1GbFe5-l8NODlLwwYItAiI_1dlvJ46YCsOTsxXXNWqB6bk9iCfBi7trAGCAltUxscIyWcvX7G6XnzlK6QDspHVMqcIHsjFKeEEIfhARCt0dEQ3aSCZE/s400/tricyrtis+crop.jpg" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126189184703919986" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW8iN_m3YYhe3YP-fXGExeISt7egfFXIcsp73sE93fj0oD_khDYCEU2bS0gJrDUQfISOIqD9iFOraffw57a9eXGkuTrNHumU7f1nHLkYPOgq88Cz9P9Onx5seLAh4Xj5lpGAuKuvNhXAE/s400/blue+aster.jpg" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126189188998887298" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZVcQz-sp1pL6CkheoVgdpcXJQA1Hb-bKf1a-ntcNJVI9u0wtvqSIf2f7PbEIRuXJMLSey0UBYhWL8YswzuNtK6JotQhw4ue4_MRJtza2w-iJEIx0L8eTXbFKXjjrmiokfFjAwjI8tavU/s400/Rudbeckia+ind+sum.jpg" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126196155435841474" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGga4Kzf6L52PUnzZfLF1vnMnR4tE5bR_vRd6RxbwSDgIN6oHUwaxEOGcqTaW80LTWe_aqxa_XJR07hyphenhyphennb14tkPG_HheTSmbUcMhVtxmczG0cEwtqPblWpHbeZXfzxKs64Foge_VgtAFg/s400/beautyberry+crop.jpg" border="0" /> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126189210473723826" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-eFJCOvoArn8JGWy9SyjujgEcj7XMCVaKrNRVJrxEVw9e21zCGchTvSK0Ct44ZYLA5nHxHJmLpySFj3VgPvRUEuN3yNOcvRf-3SoMDl_qNP_DSBQU0XeZmSA4PZq1Bl4UWTBy10WPkDw/s400/white+chrysanthemum.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"></div>lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-56467478085493235162007-10-15T07:41:00.000-04:002007-11-04T22:31:51.882-05:00FAIR RESULTS<span style="color:#cc6600;"><strong>Yes, the results were fair! This year, one of the categories I thought it would be fun to try is:</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>SECTION 003<br /></strong>Adult Photography<br /></span><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Color</strong><br /><strong>1981</strong> Flowers(s) Plant(s)</span> <p><span style="color:#006600;">I'm not much of a photographer -- to me it's about the plants, not the pictures of them! -- but since I already <em>have</em> all of these plant photos anyway....</span></p><p><span style="color:#006600;">I've chosen a few from this year's blog posts, & reposted them below. To the right of this (top of the column), you'll see a poll asking you which photo you think I should enter. (I should've done this sooner, I know -- have to turn it in two days from now! Like I say every year at fair time: NEXT YEAR!) I need help to choose the photo that best fits what they're basing the judging on, as described here:</span></p><p><span style="color:#000000;">RULES AND REGULATIONS<br /><br />9. Each exhibit will be judged on the following:<br />a. Technical aspects such as composition,<br />lighting, cropping, etc.<br />b. Meeting the stated class description/theme.<br />c. Impact on the viewer – does it catch and<br />hold your interest?</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#006600;">I started with 10 photos, but I realized that when I look at them I can't help but think of the live plant. I tried to narrow it down based on the impact of the photo itself. </span><span style="color:#006600;">Here are the four I'm considering:<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#006600;"></span><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqBAgr5Yo1l4Ju_UeTX-XN4PaAxB5nKIAZQeyjhnyqlUxNS5rN49MjvsxR5aNZvAtKwIi9H1tm5c9AuZOtZsF_gLnPzee5qGvDXGoT7GGcEm_CR6PSBoqnGr6ey6qwGc5ieP-g07iANmo/s400/DSCF0012" border="0" /> <img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYsERS-5BwmbJRd1q-e6Pk2pOs_R2pwA0ugqGwZCvFzZcrBFGdbBDIQEbCHFGfjiujxD6u94nPjlRH0AYYxmDailQbFZRtKSgmX4Dfq9o8r5QeiqYbP0QGBZGiYGdodE85RIJD_R0hRoc/s400/DSCF0044.JPG" border="0" /><br /><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwVZumPbeiVwrn9s1thyrbWOrWA9-PegMwe4yLyyyaAifFKw3qw8VxzFZp5LjvVsurwBDC5_nj5YvmHoB4eE6vbHl2Qh0IgHqvwuBaK-Jys034LCV43vC0W9jC9sBsnuJw82q36cZJGTo/s400/silverbell+sky.jpg" border="0" /><br /><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 322px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" height="426" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlWBWBSBx1euLhOmqFrrMH7_OM3Kqp11tPFBW_hFK1JVj56ezoMw2MzMsLQsg8urJfZBmU4f3xoQQ6m5I2KQQ8X58261QiaMHF2XME0NJZ3cq91yKvZ485G9F1Gbq7_v23FEijk45REuY/s400/suzanne+tb+iris" border="0" /></p>lymabeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16315437514109070904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441871424903290537.post-17476884778653147242007-09-11T09:41:00.000-04:002007-10-06T13:17:24.781-04:00The neglected gardenIt's a rainy day. Finally.<br /><br />I ought to be sorting through the 2 weeks of mail & school papers on my desk. Instead -- or at least first -- I thought I'd put up some of the (very few) garden photos I've taken lately.<br /><br />August is the height of the Garden Doldrums. May/June is a blooming festival. Lots of things that languished in the July/August heat & humidity (& add to that this year's lack of rainfall) are starting to perk back up. A few are just hitting their peak now. Yet others (the hardy mums, the 'Autumn Bride' heuchera, the blue woods aster, the monkshood) are still in progress -- buds at this point, with the promise of becoming the season's last hurrah in October & November.<br /><br />These are the recent & current bloomers -- few, & much appreciated:<br /><br /><div><div></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5111349987951170642" style="DISPLAY: block; behind<span style="color:#3333ff;">Nature marches on. Flowers that are harbingers of spring - dainty snowdrops, majestic daffodils - will bloom in the snow if need be to maintain their schedule. I, being neither dainty nor majestic, more readily succomb to the forces around me, & regularly fall behind. Sometimes I end up altogether abandoning my intentions. Occasionally, I feel badly about having to do so. More often, after briefly weighing the choices, I feel relief about having one less thing on the list, in spite of the fact it left the list undone!</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#3333ff;"><br />My "lists" sometimes take on a life of their own. At any given time, a large portion of them exist solely in my head. If I ever saw all of my lists in front of me at the same time, I think medical intervention would be necessary. It's a built-in safety mechanism that I usually don't know where half of them are. I don't know that they save me any time. Before my dear friend</span> <span style="color:#006600;">Suzanne</span> <span style="color:#3333ff;">arrives for our shopping trip, I'll spend 20 good minutes (the breakfast dishes could have been done) sifting through stacks on my desk looking for that list of things I've been compiling to buy on just such a trip. Sometimes I find it. Sometimes not. But in the end, shopping trips with <span style="color:#006600;">Suzanne</span> are much more about spending time together than they are about buying the things on the list. The fabric softener can wait.<br /></span><br /><span style="color:#3333ff;">And so, in a fashion parallel with the rest of my life, I am falling behind on this blog! I had started a post about my children on June 7th, but didn't finish it, so saved it as a draft. I since posted twice about Aislinn's new dress. Yesterday when I finished the 7 June post, I realized that it would show up below the two dress posts, already buried, never having it's moment at the top. You might as well ask which is my favorite child, or whether I'd prefer to give up food or sleep. I look forward to each new development in the garden with anticipation. However, one of my favorite combinations is when these three water irises are blooming at the same time in the rain garden. It unfolds over three days. The yellow flag iris blooms first. The second day the copper iris opens, & on day three, the Darby iris. One had the start of a nest (the male will do more than one, & the female chooses - love this plan), & the other had a complete nest with 3 eggs! Hopefully it's an active project, which likely will mean a fourth egg tomorrow. </strong></span><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#3366ff;"><strong></strong></span><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#3366ff;"><strong>Oh, and... saw my first hummingbird of the season yesterday at the feeder I'd just put out Friday. (Keegan claims to have seen one a few days ago. He's probably right.) She was not shy, & hummed around me often as I worked nearby. Fascinating creatures! I have to find that second feeder. It's in the garage somewhere. So is just about everything else. It was gloriously full spring. As we approached home, though, we rolled down the windows & delighted in the sweet-smelling, fresh, un-urban air. Then the 2 of us walked & danced around the yard for more than 1/2 an hour, happy to be home, out in the wide-open space. And there in beautiful bloom was the patch of Virginia bluebells.</span></span><br />
